The Municipality of Linapacan was founded in 1954 and consists of 10 barangays. These 10 barangays namely, Barangonan (Iloc), Cabunlawan, Calibangbangan, Decabaitot, Maroyogroyog, Nangalao, New Culaylayan, Pical, San Miguel, and San Nicolas formerly belonged to Coron and separated to establish an independent municipality.
The Linapacan is a Cuyonon word that means “to step on” but there are rumors that the name was derived from a legend. They say that a beautiful woman was seen by Spanish missionaries walking along the beach and they asked who she was and answered Pacan. They discovered she was the wife of the chieftain and called her Reina Pacan and the word evolved into Linapacan.
