Chainsaws are seized in Palawan
[Credits: Business Mirror ] Illegal Logging

At a younger age, we are taught why and how important the environment is. How it gives us protection from unexpected natural disasters. Tree planting programs have been made by organizations, schools, government, and other sectors to replace the trees. The fact that trees grow fully in years doesn't seem to be effective and helpful enough.

The trees were cutted down and are either used for furniture, houses, charcoal, or simply being cleared out for development of some areas. It took years to have a tree standing in the land and cutting down makes it possibe within a few minutes to hours and this explains why we have a huge difference in our surroundings from past few years.

Mountains are bulldozed, trees are cutted, and animals are sold. What would the future be? What else would be left in the future? Inorder to preserve, it must be protected and conserved. Illegal logging has slowly affected the environment and the government has established a law that can be used in protecting and punishing violators.

In the Municipality of San Vicente, Palawan chainsaws were seized by the Municipal Public Safety and Emergency Office (MPSEO) on March 16. Chainsaws confiscated was reported to be used in illegal logging in the islands.

From the month of January to February they have taken 18 chainsaws from different barangays such as Port Batron (9), New Agutaya (2), San Isidro (1), Sto. Niño (1), New Canipo (2), and Caruray (1). The chainsaws were transferred to the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development Staff (PCSD).

The MPCEO was lead by Orlando Estoya said that the government wants to imply the law, as well as protect and campaign to prevent more damage to the environment. On an interview he said "Ito ay resulta ng adhikain ng ating mayor na paigtingin ang kampanya laban pagsira ng kalikasan at pag-violate ng Chainsaw Act dito sa bayan ng San Vicente lalong lalo na ang protection ng ating watershed area at generally, ng ating kagubatan,”.

Republic Act 9175 also known as the Chainsaw Act of 2002 is an act regulating ownership, possession, sale, importation, amd use of chainsaws penalizing chain saws, penalizing violations thereof and for other purposes. The persons responsible for violating the Act will also facencharges with another penalties.

He also added "Refrain from destroying our environment and tulungan ang ating mayor sa gusto niyang panatilihing mayabong ang ating kalikasan".

Estoya encourages the residents in San Vicente to take care of the nature and those who operate illegal logging to stop.

Trees are big contributors in the environment, it provides oxygen, improves the air quality, conserves water, preserves soil, and supports the wildlife's.

There are ways to help the nature to be restored, one of the few is reporting illegal actions into goverment offices, planting trees and taking care of the nature. Through this, we will be able to give the world that the future needs.
