Most of the Pediatricians or Health Workers encourage pregnant women to breastfeed their babies after giving birth. Breast milk is more nutritious and could help the baby fight infections, as well as other illnesses. As much as breastfeeding is vital, it is also important to give them nutritional foods as they grow. In babies, that ages 6 to 12 months require more nutritional foods to support their growing development and give them more energy to explore.
According to Unicef, “Young children need enough nutritious food every day to grow healthy, strong and smart. At around 6 months old, your baby is growing quickly and needs more energy and nutrients than at any other time in her life”.
Based on the Expanded National Nutrition Survey 2018 from the Department of Science and Technology -Food and Nutrition Research Institute (DOST-FNRI), 2 out of Filipino Children were underweight and stunted, while 3 out of 10 Filipino Children's are wasted. Because of the nutritional needs for this age, the DOST-FNRI introduces MonRice (Monggo Rice).
On the social media account of the Aborlan Municipal Health Office- Nutrition Division, they posted about the MonRice.
As stated from the List of DOST-FNRI Developed Technologies Relevant for School Feeding program as of August 10, 2020, the Rice-Mongo Blend is a complementary food. Instant Rice-Mongo Blend is a complementary food rich in protein and energy. The blend is processed by an extrusion cooking method. The product is ready to eat by adding previously boiled water to the desired consistency. Sugar or mashed fruits, or boiled vegetables may be added for flavor and to increase nutritional value. Rice-Mongo baby food contains 120 kcal and 4.0 grams protein per 30 grams, enough to meet 17% of recommended energy and 29% of recommended protein intake for 6 months to less than 12 months old children. The MonRice in the Municipality of Aborlan was produced in the Local Government Unit in Sitio Suring, Brgy. Pangonbilian, Brooke’s Point.
There is also another technology product, such as Iron Rice Premix, Iron Fortified Rice, Rice-MongoSesame Blend, Rice-Mongo Crunchies, Rice-Mongo Curls, Ready-to-Eat Complementary Food (Paste) for Infants and Young Children (Momsie), Micronutrient Growth Mix (MGM), Brown Rice Bar, and Tubig Talino.
